The St Lawrence shoreline has been the subject of important studies conducted during the previous phases of the Canada–Quebec Agreement of the St Lawrence Vision 2000 (SLV2000) Action Plan, in part thanks to the efforts of the Canadian Wildlife Service.

The Navigation Committee was established in 1998 under Phase III of the St Lawrence Vision 2000 Action Plan. Its overall objective is to implement a sustainable navigation strategy for the St Lawrence, in co-operation with the shipping industry, environmental stakeholders, government and the general public.

One of the main objectives of SLV 2000 vis-à-vis shipping is to "protect the St Lawrence shoreline against navigation-induced erosion."

This section has been produced thanks to the co-operation of various Navigation Committee partners involved in attaining the objective.

Organizations and riverside residents can quickly find out shore conditions for their St Lawrence properties or regions, between Cornwall and Montmagny. The section describes the specific characteristics of shoreline areas and provides tools for dealing with problems that may arise. It also provides detailed information on erosion, as well as on wave action resulting from the passage of commercial ships and recreational boats—one of the erosion factors specific to the St Lawrence (see Le Fleuve newsletter article).
