The Problem of Erosion and Wave Action

Photo: eroded shorelineThis section identifies the eroded shoreline areas and sectors where erosion is most severe, describes the severity of the process and evaluates the erosive effect that waves generated by commercial ships and recreational boats have on shores.

Methodology

Photo: cartographyDuring the summer of 1994, the Cornwall–Montmagny stretch of the St Lawrence shoreline was assessed to determine the most problematic areas in terms of erosion. Fieldwork was conducted mainly on a boat and using maps (1:20,000 scale). Shores were mapped in homogenous segments, and data was compiled onto approximately 1,900 observation sheets. Erosion severity was documented only for the Montreal–Sorel area by analysing black-and-white aerial photographs (1:15,840 scale) taken in 1964 and 1983.
